Women around the globe can commiserate in the monthly pain that is menstrual cramps. Dysmenorrhea (or painful menstruation) is experienced by 85 percent of women, and symptoms range from pelvic, stomach, and back pain, to cramping, fatigue, and headaches. So what does the science tell us about whether or not CBD for period pain is an effective pain management strategy?
Store-bought treatments like heating pads, aspirin, and caffeine work for some women, but for many, the pain is still too much—or the side effects of OTC painkillers (like stomach upset) are undesirable.
CBD oil has emerged as an effective way to reduce cramping in many parts of the body, including the uterus. The female reproductive system has a very high concentration of cannabinoid receptors that are involved in regulating fertility. In fact, the highest amount of anandamide, the endocannabinoid known as our "bliss molecule," is found in our uterus!
Endocannabinoid levels also appear to be linked with estrogen levels. When levels of the endocannabinoid anandamide are low, women experience more symptoms of PMS and period cramping. CBD oil can boost these levels of anandamide, reduce inflammation, relax muscles, and improve mood. CBD also activates the vanilloid receptor, which can reduce the perception of pain.
Taken daily as a tincture, drink, or edible, CBD oil can prevent hormonal imbalances that trigger painful periods before they start. Lotions, creams, and balms containing CBD oil, like Tough Love Pain Relieving Lotion, can also be applied to the pelvis and back to directly relieve pain and spasms, making the monthly menstrual cycle a more comfortable experience. For best results, take at least 15 mg of CBD oil under the tongue twice daily during the menstrual cycle and increase to 25 mg or more twice daily per day while experiencing menstrual cramping.
